Uber rolls out enhanced safety measures amid Covid-19 outbreak

Uber will use new technology to verify all drivers are wearing a mask or face covering before taking a trip in Pakistan, as part of its #MovewithSafety campaign
Uber has allocated $50 million for safety equipment globally, asking both drivers and riders to take additional safety precautions.

As the government begins to ease off lockdown and workplaces slowly resume operations, Uber Pakistan’s #MoveWithSafety campaign aims to educate and raise awareness of the additional safety measures it has put in, in order to help the app’s users stay safe.

Uber partner drivers in Pakistan will be asked, as part of a new in-app safety checklist, to verify that they are wearing a mask using their new object recognition technology. Any driver who is not wearing a mask or a face covering will not be able to go online. Drivers can cancel the ride if a rider is not wearing a mask, without incurring a penalty. Partner drivers will also be asked to confirm if they have taken additional safety measures, such as regularly sanitising their car and making hand sanitizers available for their riders. Riders will also be able to cancel rides, without incurring penalties, if drivers aren’t wearing masks.

Similarly, riders will be asked whether they have taken necessary safety precautions, like washing their hands before getting in the car, sitting in the backseat and opening windows for ventilation. Only two riders per car will be allowed, in line with government regulations in Sindh and Peshawar, and three riders per car in Punjab and the Federal Capital.

Globally, Uber is investing $50 million to help ensure every driver and courier has access to personal protective equipment, and cleaning and sanitising supplies needed to work more safely on the Uber app. This includes providing masks to drivers across Pakistan and reimbursing eligible drivers and couriers for the purchase of a sanitizer or disinfectant product of their choice up to a maximum amount which is defined for each country. So far, Uber has provided or reimbursed hand sanitisers, cleaning sprays and disinfectant wipes to drivers in Pakistan, as well as over 20,000 masks. It is also partnering with Unilever to distribute hygiene kits to drivers and couriers across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Saad N. Pall, General Manager at Uber Pakistan said, At Uber, we put safety at the heart of everything we do and we believe technology can make travel safer than ever before. Now, as cities begin to reopen, we want to ensure that both riders and drivers recognise that they have a shared responsibility to make travel safer, and enough flexibility to manage this, while prioritising health and safety. Governments as well as the private sector across the globe are continually working to assess and adapt a world post the COVID-19 pandemic, and we want to use the scale and influence of our platform to proactively complement the government’s efforts to help everyone stay safe and healthy.”

Previously, Uber also announced the launch of Uber Medics in the UAE and Saudi Arabia as part of its global commitment to Move What Matters, providing healthcare workers with discounted trips to and from their workplaces. Additionally, ‘Uber By the Hour’ offers riders with an hourly ride option, without having to re-request a trip at each location - strengthening safety, providing additional flexibility for riders and an additional earnings opportunity for drivers.

Other safety initiatives announced in light of COVID-19 include:
New health and hygiene feedback system: Uber is adding new options for feedback in the app. This includes an option to report if a rider or driver is wearing a mask or not. Anyone who is repeatedly flagged for violating the new safety policies risks losing access to Uber’s apps.
Safety education materials: Working with the World Health Organization and the latest public health advice, Uber has compiled safety tips and recommendations specifically geared toward ridesharing. This will be used to educate riders and drivers on unsafe behavior.
Financial Compensation: Financial assistance will be provided for up to 14 days to any driver who is diagnosed with COVID-19 or is individually asked to self-isolate by a public health authority while their account is on hold.

These new safety measures will stay in effect until the end of July, when they will be reviewed based on the latest official health guidance.

‘71% businesses in Pakistan admit to cash flow problems’, ACCA’s latest survey reveals

Findings for Pakistan reveal organisations are focusing on the long-term return to strategic opportunities for the future beyond 6 months, as they look ahead post-pandemic
Organisations face increasing operational challenges as a result of the domino effect of Covid-19. Irrespective of size, sector or country the economic and social impact of the pandemic has expanded, and challenges are growing for business and the accountancy profession, reveals ACCA’s Covid-19 global survey ‘The Road to Recovery.
Following March 2020’s original report, three months on the picture now crystalises many key issues that need to be addressed by policymakers and governments. ACCA is calling on governments worldwide to review economic rescue packages and enable a return to sustainable growth.
For Pakistan, the overall picture is one of a slow return to normal. The survey asked respondents in Pakistan a number of questions specific to their role or organisation sector and the results show:
  • 55% say employee productivity is negatively affected
  • 48% of organisations are focusing on the long-term return to strategic opportunities for the future beyond 6 months
  • 52% say customers have stopped or reduced their purchases
  • 71% admit to cash flow problems.
Sajjeed Aslam, head of ACCA Pakistan says: ‘Our data for June reveals continued cash flow challenges, with half of respondents in the Pakistan saying this is a problem. Since the March research, the new data reveals greater concerns over financing and debt issues, and given the global economic climate, it means these will be difficult matters to resolve.
‘The key issue at the centre of these issues is a collapse in customer demand for many organisations, with more than half of respondents citing purchases as completely stopped or reduced here in Pakistan. It’s a domino effect, with both product launches and investment plans being deferred, further compounded by supply chain challenges and issues with customer order fulfillment.’
Other results for the Pakistan show:
  • 72% have now adopted flexible working from home strategies, with 42% adopting staff rotas to accommodate social distancing requirements.
  • 47% are implementing an operating cost reduction strategy
  • 40% are reviewing organisation processes to identify efficiencies
  • 27% evaluating their social responsibility to the wider communities affected by the outbreak
The poll also asked respondents about the effectiveness of recent government schemes, and found less than a quarter of respondents from Pakistan rating the economic stimulus package as effective. Challenges remain across many other countries.
Sajjeed Aslam concludes: ‘The pandemic has had a profound effect that will resonate well beyond 2020. But it is good to see respondents planning ahead, thinking of the longer term while managing the present, and also thinking of the bigger picture about their responsibilities to the wider community that’s also been impacted by Covid-19.’
Jamie Lyon, the report author and head of business management at ACCA, explains the ACCA’s roadmap to recovery advice detailed in the report: ‘Through our “roadmap to recovery”, we’re recommending that organisations follow the “three As” – Act and respond sustainably to the immediate crisis in the short term; Analyse the different information sources to start to build the path to recovery in the medium term and Anticipate how strategies need to evolve over the longer term.’
ACCA’s roadmap to recovery is available here. This June survey of over 4,500 ACCA members follows the publications of ACCA’s report COVID-19 Global Survey: Inside Business Impacts and Responses in April 2020, and continues to track ACCA sentiment around the world on the impact of COVID-19 and examines how organisations are responding.

Speaking of surround sound, the HUAWEI Y6p comes with a 9.1 channel sky surround sound, which is perfect when you are watching movies for that theater like effect. The HUAWEI Y Series Revolutionizes the Entry-level Segment with the Introduction of a HD Camera and Super Long-lasting Battery

These amazing Y Series smartphones can be pre-ordered from Monday, June 22, 2020 onwards. Huawei’s entry-level Y Series has a reputation for bringing in features from more premium phones, giving it a competitive edge in its segment. Be it camera, battery life, overall performance or even design ethos, each device in the HUAWEI Y Series is designed to make premium features accessible to more users. This is evident in its success in being a popular choice among customers since its inception in 2015. Pioneering the entry-level segment, each device in the HUAWEI Y Series brings a fresh wave of innovation to its users, bringing to them new features and stylish designs with every smartphone. Huawei added two new smartphones to this series, both of them packing powerful features, while also being unique in their own aspects, the HUAWEI Y6p and HUAWEI Y8p. Both of these phones come with a wide range of interesting innovations that not only make them better smartphones, but revolutionizes the entry-level smartphone segment with some never seen before features. First up is the HUAWEI Y6p that takes a different approach to changing things around in the entry-level segment. Aimed at users who do more with their smartphone and demand more battery life, this new smartphone comes with a massive 5000mAh battery that not only lasts long during intensive use, but can also act as a power bank to charge other devices. As with all Huawei products, this new addition also comes with a powerful camera setup in the form of its 13MP Triple Camera setup with a 13MP main camera which excels in low light, a 5MP Ultra-Wide and a 2MP depth sensor for natural bokeh effects. This is complemented by an 8MP Selfie camera upfront as well. Along with its large battery, the HUAWEI Y8p is also a powerhouse, with 3GB of RAM for smooth running of apps, 64GB of storage and an MTK Helio P22 processor for efficient performance. Another one of its standout features is in regard to its audio. Thanks to HUAWEI SuperSound, audio is louder, clearer and sharper than ever before, while additional features like FM radio that doesn’t need earphones to act as antenna, 9.1 channel sky surround sound for immersive audio and party mode, further provide everything an audiophiles needs. In terms of display, the HUAWEI Y6p features the 6.3-inch HD+ display with a resolution of 1600x720. The back of the phone comes in beautiful colors of Emerald Green, Phantom Purple and Midnight Black while also housing the rear fingerprint sensor. Next to that is the HUAWEI Y8p, which brings to the segment a 48MP AI Triple Camera, powerful performance and a stunning display. Its camera setup is quite impressive for an entry-level smartphone, in fact it is something that one would usually find on a more premium device. The setup consists of 48MP main camera, 8MP Ultra-Wide angle camera and a 2MP depth camera for bokeh effects. However, what truly shines in this setup is the HUAWEI Y8p’s capability for low light photography with the Handheld Night Mode that uses on board AI and camera sensors for well-lit shots in low light situations. This camera setup also brings to the entry-level segment a master AI that can recognize up to 22 scenes while shooting and intelligently adjusts any settings required for a perfect shot. Selfies are also vastly improved thanks to the 16MP AI Selfie Camera. The HUAWEI Y8p also brings in outstanding performance with 6GB of RAM for smoother running of apps and software, with a massive 128GB of storage. It is powered by a 4000 mAh battery for all day performance, and runs on the Kirin 710F chipset with EMUI 10.1 for smooth and efficient performance. The HUAWEI Y8p also boasts its 6.3-inch HUAWEI Dewdrop OLED display, a first for the series. The display comes with an FHD+ resolution of 2400 x 1080 and even features an In-Display Fingerprint sensor, something not seen before in the series. The HUAWEI Y8p also continues with elegant design ethos with a 3D Curved Back design with nature inspired colorways of Breathing Crystal and Midnight Black. Both the phones come with HUAWEI AppGallery pre-installed, which gives users access to a wide range of global and local apps which can be safely downloaded. The world’s third largest app marketplace, the HUAWEI AppGallery takes full advantage of Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) and features a variety of cross-platform apps for an all-scenario user experience. With these new smartphones, as well as other phones in Huawei’s Y series, the brand has managed to revolutionize the entry-level segment to introduce devices that are not only affordable but also packed with premium features.

realme band

The realme Band is certainly one of the most affordable fitness bands in the market today, but that doesn’t mean that performance is compromised. With a retail price of just Rs 3,999/- , headlining features include a large 0.96” colour display which has a display range of over 65,000 colors. Designed to be used for advanced health and fitness monitoring, the realme Band has 5-level brightness adjustment via the realme Link app for better visibility outdoors (or indoors), along with a “gravity sensor” to automatically wake up the display.

The importance of health monitoring is more apparent now than ever, and real-time heart rate monitoring is a key feature of realme’s latest wearable. Whether you’re exercising or simply working from home, the high precision PPG optical heart rate sensor measures your heart rate in real-time every 5 minutes—to a high degree of accuracy, according to realme. Of course, sleep is also a key aspect of life, and the realme band even has an intelligent algorithm to analyse your sleep quality; knowledge is power, after all.

In any balanced lifestyle, regular exercise is vital. And with 9 sport modes included, you’re pretty much covered with the advanced performance tracking metrics available—even one for games of cricket. Meanwhile, with IP68 water resistance, the fitness band is protected against dirt, dust, sand, and “occasional dips in the water”.

As a cherry on top, realme has also designed their new wearable with convenience and ease-of-use in mind. For example, charging the realme Band is one of the easiest methods around: plug it directly into a USB port, no cables required. Even on the software side of things, the realme Band supports almost all app notifications, so you’ll never miss a message from work again.

All of that is supported via the realme Link app, which is available on the Google Play Store and the App Store.

realme Buds Air Neo

To complement this lifestyle, realme has also announced a value-for-money pair of TWS earbuds: the realme Buds Air Neo at retails price of Rs 7,999/- . This is essentially a “Lite” version of the previously-launched realme Buds Air, albeit one with a larger 13mm DBB sound driver along with dynamic bass boost for the perfect listening experience. Powered by the R1 chip, the Buds Air Neo offers up to 3 hours of music playback on a full charge, and 17 hours in total with the included charging case.

But the idea of a balanced lifestyle also involves sitting back, relaxing, and giving your mind a rest from the hectic world around us. For many of us, that involves gaming—specifically, mobile gaming. As such, the Super Low Latency mode is essential. As any seasoned gamer will tell you, latency is a key aspect of gaming. For example, high latency results in a delayed response from the gamer, which is very often a make-or-break in-game situation. This is all part of the Gaming Mode, which offers a reduced audio latency of just 119.2ms—perfect for first-person shooter games like COD or PUBG.
Plus, with the help of Google Fast Pair Technology (GFP) and Bluetooth 5.0 technology, the realme Buds Air Neo supports Instant Auto Connection with smartphones. All you need to do is open the realme Buds Air Neo charging case, and compatible phones will automatically detect the earbuds for easy and instant pairing (10m effective range).

And when you’re exercising, the Buds Air Neo are also the ideal companion—in rain or shine. With an IPX4 splash-proof resistance, you should be safe to run in the rain, so you won’t have to pause your music playback no matter what.

HUAWEI Nova 7i – Outclass Photography that Wins Awards

Huawei handset users can join the HUAWEI NEXT-IMAGE AWARDS 2020 and get a chance to show their work to the entire world

As a singular medium of convenience for the modern human, the smartphone has, since its inception, continued to offer features that entice the user. It is clearly no more a mere tool of communication. Among its unique features, the in-built camera is arguably one of the distinguishing aspects of the smartphone.

As we say this, let us inform our photography enthusiast readers about a beautiful new gadget that was recently launched and became a hot selling hit in its price segment; a device with the power to bring about a mini-revolution in the realm of photography. This new device is the HUAWEI Nova 7i: a phone that puts DSLR-level imagery into the hands of everyone. HUAWEI Nova 7i is a device capable of doing everything a DSLR camera can do and more. With a 48MP Quad AI Camera, it delivers crisp images that capture the depth and emotions of every picture.

But wait! There is another super exciting news from Huawei in the pipeline. It’s the HUAWIE NEXT-IMAGE AWARDS 2020 – a global awards contest celebrating the very best of photography done with Huawei smartphones. Anyone who uses a Huawei smartphone can share their best photos taken with a Huawei device and get a chance to win up to USD 10,000/- and their very own photography beast i.e. the HUAWEI P40 Pro. Entries can be submitted in the Gallery section of HUAWEI Community under the contestant category by Friday, 31 July, 2020. The final evaluation of the contest will be done by the awards committee and announced on the official site of the awards.

Huawei didn’t stop at the mere launch of this sleek new device, Nova 7i. It wanted its users to truly benefit from the Huawei Nova 7i experience by encouraging amateur photographers to try their hands on it in real-life settings. In doing so, Huawei presented an opportunity for what it calls the ‘imagineers’ to showcase their creative skills, engage with a community of tech-savvy youth and gain recognition in the field of photography. The #ShotonHuawei campaign for HUAWEI Nova 7i gave photographers using Huawei smartphones from across the country a shot at exhibiting their photography talent. They included Marvi Soomro, Mavikh Azam, Amjad Nawaz, Areesh Zubair, Asad Amir and Humza Sheikh who took the opportunity to capture visuals of people, places, cultures and cuisines with their Nova 7i device.

Asad Amir
At a time when the entire country was on lockdown, Asad was in the perfect setting. Hailing from the beautiful valley of Hunza, Asad put the camera to test capturing scenic images of Hunza’s picturesque landscape. The 8MP Ultra Wide Angle Lens of the HUAWEI Nova 7i took a stunning photo of the Hunza Valley which gave everyone a welcome respite – straight from Gilgit Baltistan.

Amjad Nawaz
While this year’s Eid was quite somber, Amjad managed to capture the true essence of the day – the Eid prayers. Putting the HDR mode to good use, Amjad merged his master aesthetic and created an image that made everyone feel the spirit of this special occasion.

Areesh Zubair
One of the most interesting lockdown projects was undertaken by Areesh Zubair called Duur Se Portrait that won him rave reviews from local and global media. He travelled to various locations and shot portraits of people in the confines of their houses – while maintaining the lockdown SoPs. One such image was captured with the HUAWEI Nova 7i as well, showing the ecstatic colours of not just the nature, but also the device.

Marvi Soomro
All our HEAs wore creative hats to combat the lockdown and find great opportunities to photograph. Here, Marvi Soomro did a dreamy photoshoot at her house, showcasing the Night Mode feature of HUAWEI Nova 7i. Even in the dim and dull lights, the HUAWEI Nova 7i captured true colours and proper lighting.

Mavikh Azam
Our whizz-kid Mavikh gave his fans a glimpse of the wilderness as he ventured out in Islamabad on a sunny morning. He used the HUAWEI Nova 7i to capture the sunkissed vastness with the Margalla Hills in the background.

Humza Sheikh
Joining the #ShotonHuawei campaign for the first time, Humza Shaikh channeled his inner bibliophile and showed what he was reading with the HUAWEI Nova 7i. The 48MP Quad AI Camera encapsulated the raw sharpness of this image, giving all book lovers a beckoning to delve into their bookshelves.
